About the Blog - Fragments of a Life

This blog will contain things I have written; some of my best photos; and a selection of my favourite recipes. I am truly fortunate to have traveled to and worked in fascinating places, met remarkable people, and seen many of the wonders of planet earth. Friends have urged me to write about these experiences and to publish my photographs. Maybe, one day, these will come together into a book. For now, they will be presented as fragments of a life since I am not yet prepared to "retire" and write. As well, for many years, I have been promising to publish my "cookbook". As I cannot get my act together to edit that all at once, I will start publishing those recipes one by one.

Peanut Lime Sauce

This is a sauce used over vegetable in a gado gado salad (see separate entry).

1/4 cup peanut oil
one small onion, minced
one tablespoon minced garlic
one tablespoon minced ginger
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup chunky peanut butter
1 cup water

  • Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
  • Add the onion and cook until just beginning to brown.
  • Add the garlic and ginger, and red pepper flakes and cook until fragrant -- about one minute.
  • Add the lime juice, soy sauce, and peanut butter.
  • Heat, stirring, until it begins to simmer.
  • Add the water, reduce the heat to medium low, and mix well.
  • Simmer until the sauce thickens, about five minutes.
